This is a journey with two halves. The first week moves through the cities and hills of Bangkok and Chiang Mai, and the second slows right down on two of Thailand's loveliest stretches of coast, Krabi and the island of Ko Yao Yai. Along the way there is kayaking, cycling, a jungle spa and plenty of quiet time on the sand, with every part of the route open to change.

You begin with two days in Bangkok. A longtail boat carries you through the khlongs, the old canals that still thread the city, with an expert guide, and one evening you head out on a Bangkok after dark tour that includes dinner. The classic sights, such as the Grand Palace, are easy to visit on your own, though a guide can be added if you would like one.

Days three to five are spent in Chiang Mai. There is a morning at Grandma's Home Cooking School, lunch included, and a full adventure day of waterfalls, cycling and kayaking. On day six you stay overnight at The Bush Camp, spending time with the elephants who live there, with lunch and dinner at the camp.

From day seven you head south to Krabi for four days. A full day in the jungle spa at Krabi's hot springs is a gentle counterpoint to the more active days, and a kayaking trip glides through the Hong Lagoon. The final stretch, days eleven to fourteen, belongs to Ko Yao Yai, an island stay with barefoot beach walks and time simply to be still together.

The pace suits a fairly energetic couple, but I can soften it if you would prefer longer, lazier days. Breakfast is included throughout, along with six lunches, two dinners, all internal transport and accommodation, and entrance fees for the guided experiences. Krabi and Ko Yao Yai are at their best from late October to early April; for other months, beaches on the east coast can be suggested instead. Accommodation on Ko Yao Yai is more limited, so it rewards booking early.
