Christ the Redeemer Rio de Janeiro

Rio is a city best understood from above and from the water, and this week-long stay gives you both. You settle into one hotel for seven nights, with flights from the main UK and Irish airports, transfers, daily breakfast and a handful of guided outings arranged, leaving plenty of room to find your own rhythm between them.

After the overnight flight, your guide meets you at the airport and sees you into your hotel. The next morning you rise to Mount Corcovado and Christ the Redeemer, with Copacabana, Ipanema and Sugarloaf laid out below, before a city tour takes in the Cathedral of St Sebastian, the Selarón Steps and views of the Maracanã Stadium and the Sambadrome. If you would like to end the day with fresh seafood, dinner at Marius Degustare can be added.

On day four a two-stage cable car carries you up Sugarloaf Mountain for a sweeping view over the beaches of the South Zone, and the afternoon is yours. For those who want to go higher still, a 30-minute helicopter flight over the city is available. Day five is the longest and, I suspect, the one you will talk about most: around three hours by road to Angra dos Reis, then a schooner out to Ilha Grande, snorkelling in the Lagoa Azul, stops at Freguesia de Santana and Baleira Beach, and a homemade buffet lunch on Japariz Beach before the return to Rio.

Day six is free. I would suggest the optional half-day in Tijuca Forest, the largest urban forest in the world, where you may spot monkeys, sloths and birdlife, and look out over Guanabara Bay from the Vista Chinesa. On day seven a guided walk through the historic centre begins at the Confeitaria Colombo pastry shop and continues to Travessa do Comércio, Praça XV, Cinelândia, the Municipal Theatre and the National Library, finishing with a tram ride through the hillside streets of Santa Teresa. In the evening, a rodízio dinner followed by live Brazilian music at Rio Scenarium can be arranged.

Your final full day is at your own pace, with the option of a cooking class to learn feijoada or seafood moqueca, or a catamaran tour of Guanabara Bay with stops to swim. On day nine you are transferred to the airport for the overnight flight home.

The price is based on Charm category hotels, such as the B&B Hotel Rio de Janeiro Copacabana Forte, subject to availability, with Superior and Luxury hotels available from £2,249 and £2,849 respectively. Included are return international flights, seven nights' accommodation, seven breakfasts and one lunch, air-conditioned transfers, the guided visits above with an English-speaking guide, air taxes and ATOL protection. Drinks, tips and the optional experiences are extra, and extra nights or alternative flights can be arranged.
